Ube is a kind of purple yam, a root vegetable similar to taro and commonly used in sweets in the Phillipines.
2nd City is a Filipino taco joint in the West Village that serves only one dessert: purple Ube Macapuno ice cream. I went for the ice cream, but stayed for the Bi-Curious Tacos (short rib and barracuda) and the Nice Buns (pork buns).
I ordered two perfectly scooped scoops of the stuff. It's just as bright purple in person as it looks in pictures, but was milder and sweeter than I expected. The coconut shreds mixed in to the base are the macapuno, the sweetened young coconut.
The verdict? More sweet than savory, but not too sweet. 10/10 would recommend to friends!
